The Big Three

The question

Why does everyone ask for your Sun, Moon, and Rising?

The Big Three are the fastest honest sketch of a chart: the Sun for what you are becoming, the Moon for what you need, the Ascendant for how you arrive. Motive, interior, and surface.

Sun — the thing you are growing toward

Your Sun is the chart's center of gravity: vitality, will, the direction you are lit from. It describes what you are moving toward rather than what you already are, which is why sun-sign descriptions so often read like an ambition.

Moon — the thing you need

The Moon is the private interior: instinct, mood, what soothes you and what you reach for when you are tired. It is the placement people rarely lead with and almost always live in.

Ascendant — the way you arrive

The Ascendant is the surface where you meet the world: manner, bearing, the impression that lands before anyone knows you. It is also the lens you look out through, which is why it is easy to miss in yourself.

Why three and not one

Sun-sign astrology flattens a whole chart onto twelve options. Adding the Moon and Ascendant multiplies that to 1,728 combinations — still a sketch, but one that can start to look like a person.
