What do fire, earth, air, water — and cardinal, fixed, mutable — organize?
Two classifications sit underneath the twelve signs. The element says what a sign is made of; the modality says how it moves. Every sign is one of each, and no combination repeats.
Fire is impulse and warmth — it starts things. Earth is substance and patience — it holds them. Air is thought and exchange — it names them. Water is feeling and memory — it absorbs them.
Cardinal signs open a season and initiate. Fixed signs sit in the middle of one and sustain. Mutable signs close it and adapt. Four elements across three modalities gives exactly twelve signs, each pairing occurring once.
Sorting your placements by element shows emphasis, not merit. A chart with no earth is not doomed to be ungrounded; it simply does not get that mode for free, and tends to build it deliberately instead.
Chart Balance counts your ten planets and your two angles, the Ascendant and Midheaven, by the element and modality of the sign each one is in.
